Massachusetts Bay Company main party begins to arrive in Charlestown.
July 1, 1630
(ca.) Led by John Winthrop, the expedition is made up of 12 [11-CHS] ships carrying some 1,000 settlers, including Thomas Dudley, Isaac Johnson, Rev. John Wilson, and Simon and Anne Bradstreet and settles initially in today’s City Square. Winthrop later writes, “A sprawling tent community quickly sprang up, the generality housing themselves as best they could,” but he and other leaders and their families occupy the “Great House,” which they purchase from its previous owner.
